View Full Version : February Morg - overnight?

Turns out the wife will be out of town and I've got the kids who get Friday off from school. I'm thinking about breaking out the tent trailer for the first time in 2009 and overnighting the night of the 6th and the night of the 7th. Have the kids bring their bikes, a friend from school maybe, and turn it into a regular campout.

Anybody else down for a little camping action to test out your gear before the Death Valley run over Easter? I realize the camping isn't the best there, but it is close to town and might be fun...

Maybe, if I can get out of work. Time will tell. Which campsite?

Desertcrawler

I'm assuming the new section won't be open yet.

Cedar camp is more like real camping, but the main area up by the obstacle course is more convenient and could sit and watch the Obstacle Course. Depends, I suppose, on how many feel like the overnight. Right now, I am leaning towards Cedar.

I may not make it to the Feb. MORG. Melinda's b-day is on the 6th, so it may depend if she has work Saturday morning or not.

interesting. will check the schedule.

might be a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast, chuck. while it's been dry, things are supposed to change in the coming week.

i agree as far as the wheeling goes, but not when it comes to camping with young children.

So I am new to the group and was looking at making the 2/7 trip to Hollister [won't be camping out]. I was wondering about this group - I have a stock 2006 LR3 and have gone off-roading maybe a dozen times (4 at Hollister). There are a lot of LR gurus in the group, any non-supersized LRs? Also, my 6 yr old son usually has a good time, but do many folks bring kids? I thought everyone was to meet somewhere at a set time, but I admit I cannot seem to find that thread anymore and the calendar is not updated. Can anyone either direct me to the thread or fill me in?

Thanks.

you're perfectly good in your LR3. most of us don't have super-sized rigs and we are in it for fun first and foremost. great group of easy-going folks. i usually bring my 5 and 3 year old boys.

folks usually meet in the parking lot past on the right past the Hollister check-in at 10am, but people are welcome to get there as early as they want, even wheel a bit, before meeting up. we all use CB channel 7 and FRS same.

There is a place called the Obstacle Course that everyone usually heads to right after the 10am start -- so latecomers can join up with the group there.

I'll be there for the MORG, camping though, we'll see. Can I get there after dark on friday night?

Desertcrawler
01-20-2009, 08:00 PM
I will post up the camping location, depending on weather. I am thinking about the place right above the obstacle course as a good place to put my trailer -- unless we have lots of tent campers then I would say Cedar would be better.

Yes you can. I had the same question coming home from the Mojave Road. I was told there are rangers at the station until ~9pm. As long as they're on duty you can pay the $10 camping fee and drive to the campground.

Sweet, I might get there around 6ish....

What we will probably want to do, once things get closer, is post up the combination code for the gate for anyone who gets there after the ranger station closes.

As it looks like some folks may be joining us, I will try and get there early enough to reserve a nice large site at Cedar Camp. THat is the campsite that is off to the left as soon as you drive in past the schoolhouse.

If you are bringing kids -- make sure and warn em about the poison oak!

Wish I could make it :( I have a few more weeks left here in Maryland. Overnight camping sounds great too. I guess by late feb I should be back home so maybe sometime after that I'll come out and play again :) I never thought I'd hear myself saying this but I miss getting together with the club... yes even Brenton :D

Luis, if you're back here by the end of Feb. you should join the Shaver Lake trip. Man, I camped out by myself last month and now everyone is camping this time, and I may not even make it:(

I was getting a lot of transmission faults and the truck seemed to be low on cranking power in the cold mornings. It also started not letting me take the key out of the ignition after turning it off, acting identical to when you turn it off in gear. I figured the 2 things were probably connected somehow. Sure enough, I took it in to the local dealer here and they found the battery to be bad and the transmission shifter bad as well, which was causing the faults plus not letting me take out the key since the sensors thought the truck was still in gear when it was in Park. Changed out both and so far, it's perfect! Even in the mornings with single digits, runs like a dream.

Good to hear you got it all figured out. Nothing much worse than car troubles in bad weather.

The kids and I will be arriving into Hollister right around sundown. Can't leave until about 3pm from the Peninsula. I'll have the tent trailer so I won't be hard to find...

I'll scope out Cedar Camp and try and find a site that will handle multiple rigs. It sounds like the rangers are open till 9pm so late arrivers should be fine..

Remember to bring plenty of firewood!

I might be up for this. Driving down Friday night and camping makes the long drive down there for a MORG more doable. I suppose I could even bring the guitar...as long as the coyotes don't mind (they can even sing along!)

Kids and I are packing up and should arrive before dusk on Friday and will set up camp at Cedar Camp. Plan is to camp Friday and Saturday.

Weather Forecast says rain Thurs, Fri, with 20% chance on Saturday and probably no rain on Sunday. So could be great conditions, could challenging...Who is in?

1. Arriving Friday
Chuck, Tyler, Marla and Robbie (Tylers friend)
Barry (chucks friend) and Cole (Tylers friend)

TigerDan?

2. Daytrippers - Saturday
PCRover?
RonCT100?

Others?

I'll set up base camp at Cedar, looks like I'll try and hold a spot with enuf room for 4 or 5 tents. I'll bring plenty of wood...

Questions? Try my cell at 650-208-1175 or post em up. I'll be off the computer grid about 1pm on Friday, but am sure some of the other day trippers will fill em in...

I'll try to make it...I've got a lot going on this weekend and it'll be a juggling act to try to fit it all in. It's partly dependent on whether a guy who wants to buy a car from me flakes or not, and if he doesn't whether or not I have to tow it to San Leandro for him.

Whatever, I don't think I can make it twice...:D

Desertcrawler
02-05-2009, 09:38 AM
Guess I was hoping that if two of you showed up we could get some good harmonizing going on...

Also, Eric wants to pick up my Motorcycle from my place as well -- so maybe you could work a deal where you deliver it to him after dropping your rig off in San Leandro!

As most of you know, I'm trying my best to get our 2009 sweatshirts and T shirts out as soon as possible. I expect the balance of our merchandise order any day, which then will start the packing/shipping marathon.

Now for this Feb MORG I have sweatshirts and T shirts from minimal stock on hand for the following

Jim McCarthy
Alan Brown
David Badillo
Daniel Harris
Gary Young
Stephen Neighbors
Mark Griffiths

no worries if your not on the list above

Hopefully the wet on Sunday will wait until AFTER we pack up our tent.

Ok, what a nice today; what a change from the last few days of rain (which we needed).

With that said, got up this mornign to work on my RRC project and decided to continue to work on it (since rain is expected tomorrow again and I have not work on the project due to the recent rain).

Just enjoy; please hold my goodie bag; I will bring the DVDs on Shaver Lake Snow Run or if you want to meet up in the Bay Area before then; say hello to the new member(s) and catch up on the next MORG!

Please pass this on if you are reading this and about to head/meet the rest of NLCR gang in Hollister. Thanks!

MORG was a blast today. We got the benefit of all the recent rain (slop conditions) and the blessing of sunny skies all day! What a great turn out. New faces, extremely friendly of course, and more than enough entertainment from our group as well as other groups out there enjoying the day.
The day started off for us as we rolled into the Sycamore Campground area to find Chuck, Linus and Barry getting ready to roll out. Linus has a really cool Dormobile and he even let me peek inside to check one out in person for the first time. Barry has one cool tricked out Jeep with all the required equipment to spank any trail he wants! And we all know what Chuck rolls in.

Here's the two playing near the mud pit and the stair step

Marla contemplating jumping in the water??

Chuck in the Rock Garden

And Chuck "volunteering" to high-center and provide an impromptu winch session hosted by none other that Will

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

'Zuki in the gulch for the first time!

Almost catching on fire for the first time!

Love this one!

Thanks guys! Fun day.

Dang it, I so wanted to go...Been sick on and off, felt like crap yesterday and decided I didn't want to drive 4 hours to camp in the rain, especially when I really needed to move out of my mini-storage into a larger one (told the manager I'd be out this weekend anyway) so...I had to make the choice. Regretted it all day today though, especially in light of the beautiful weather today. Really wanted to jam with Linus around the campfire too, I guess that'll have to wait till the Mendo run.
