Mike (my son) and I are off to MOAB and the National Rally in the morning. I wanted to start a new thread to keep track of our progress. We are driving the '95 RRC LWB which has been outfitted with some new Inland Rovers Sliders and an ARB rear locker to go along with the 3" OME lift. No extreme runs are planned, but we do plan on seeing what the RRC can do on the Slickrock. Frank is towing his D90 to the rally so I will try to keep up. It will be a challenge, but we'll give it a shot.

I will try to post pictures when I have Internet connectivity and the time. We will do our best to represent the NCLR at the Rally!

Thanks guys! We made it to St George , UT today in about 11hrs with stops. The trip went well except for some bad vibrations from the new front drive shaft at 65-75mph. Of course this is the speed everyone wanted to drive today so it got quite annoying. I may have Frank bring my old shaft and swap it out for the return trip. The 4.2 did well on the grades if I used 3rd gear as it struggled in drive at freeway speeds on the big climbs. Overall I love the RRC for freeway cruising especially at a legal 75mph in NV/AZ/UT. I would still be on the road if I drove the D90...

We'll be here until Tuesday, then off to MOAB when the official reporting starts.

HA

Only in Ca. No specific trailer speed limit in Nevada, you can drive the regular speed limit while towing. (Or could when I towed a trailer across the state a year ago last Memorial day!) And I believe it's 65 in Utah.

Well, TigerDan, not really in CA either...all those Delta rats going over the 580 at 80+ with boats in tow....

Gary, glad to know you had to shift to 3rd to make the climbs...I have to as well, and then I top out at 40, but now I know a 4.2 is not the end all answer...

I need to figure out how to do the legal crate 350 swap....and smog her.

I could do 70 in 3rd up the grades no problem Mike. No complaints from the engine or the driver...
I almost forgot to mention, it was 101 outside so no cooling issues.

Plan is to take off from Frank's shop Tuesday at noon. (unless, of course, any of you drop our rigs off last minute then it will be closing time)

We will be getting in sometime on Wednesday...

ok, so the 4.2 may be the answer! And at 101 outside, I bet the air conditioning was very nice....

It is the bumper, it makes the RRCLWB more streamiline...

We rolled in yesterday evening with the '03 D2. I was really amazed at how much better the 4.6 works on those highway mountain passes compared to the 4.0 in Sheila.

Ran Top Of The World this morning after meeting up with an SCLR member. Ended up solo shortly into the run when he was having mechanical issues and had to turn back. Not really any technical sections... but I did find a section to try out the CDL Frank installed... THANKS Frank! Absolutely awesome views at the top!

I think I saw Gary driving out of City Market tonight... in a green Classic? Hope to catch up with the NCLR crew tomorrow morning.

Cheers,
-Barry

Frank and Chuck are on there way, should be in MOAB Wednesday afternoon.

I should have some photo's to upload Wednesday night!

Good to hear from you Barry! Have fun and say hello to the NCLR crew for us!

If you and/or Gary can also post your GPS coordinates at either the start and/or end of these trail runs, some of us e.g. me, Brenton... use Google Earth and we can see or visual appreciate the terrain/trails you guys are running.

Side note: Tell Gary that Ron said if he had the SPOT with him (smile), he can turn on tracking, the SPOT will transmit his coordinates and we can see them on Google Map.

Ron

Got ya Ron, maybe next year we'll have spot....

I have no real GPS with me this trip, just a street nav unit. Hopefully Barry can help out with some coord's for you.

Great idea Ron!! I'd love to see where all the trail heads are on Google. They would also make a great addition to the library and planning for next year's trip:D

Got yah Gary!

If Barry has one or Chuck, that would be great!

David (DCProven) and I are using Google Earth to plot our trip to Peru and Chile. David has plotted the first week and it's amazing the see the "Fly Over" feature, and then Pause to zoom in/out details/terrain, and also see elevation and view in 3D!

Very cool tools!

Have fun in Moab!

Are you familiar with Google Earth tools? I am learning and would like to use it more for trip planning.

We got into Winnemuca about 1:30 a.m after leaving Fremont around 7pm or so. That was good time, even factoring in a Carls Jr and a gas stop. It is now 6am, we are showered up and ready to roll towards the rally.

We have Gary's driveshaft, a cooler of margaritas, and a tank full of gas...

Perfect day, temp around 90 with some overcast nearby. We had a good assortment of rigs with several series, discos, RRC, and a MKIII RR.

Here is a MOAB Poison Spider Trail Sampler...

12 hours to complete the trail

One LR Defender broke an oil pump, lost oil pressure
One LR Defender blew a fox shock
One LR Disco damaged steering and broken motor mounts (had to leave on the trail)
One LR Disco broken rear axle (pulled axles) and motor mounts
One LR Defender broke a rear diff (pulled axles).

Great trail, good company

Frank and Chuck in the D90, Barry and his wife Lori in his DII, Matt with a couple of friends in his 109 and my son and I in the RRC LWB hit the Golden Spike trail around 7:45AM. We didn't finish till around 6:30PM. What a great day it was. Golden spike is just a great fun trail with everything you want out of MOAB. All the rigs did great with the only carnage being Barry's rear bumper getting tweaked and my ABS pump failing.

Made it to Tahoe 12:30AM today (Mt time) after a slight detour to Master Muffler in Provo Utah ... to complete prep work for future Rovertym bumper:D

Friday's impromptu trail run was a great time with just a few Rovers. It would be great to see more NCLR rigs next time! I shot some high-def video of The Golden Crack crossing which should look awesome on the big screen!

Safe travels to everyone headed home today.

There is a run called Metal Masher as part of the Rally.

It's toughest obstacle is called Rock Chucker.

Matt Moran was the only one to try it, and succeed. Getting up went so fast we had no time to video. The climb down took a bit longer, and thats what we shot on the attached youtube..
