Date: Friday, Aug 1
Time: 8am
Meeting Place: http://www.treadlightly.org/high20sierra20map.pdf

I am gauging Interest to see how my folks would be interested in helping out "Tread Lightly" Recreation Rescue mission on Friday, 8am Aug 1 on Bald Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trail in the Sierra National Forest.

For some of us luckly enough to have wheeled Bald Mountain last year's NCLR summer run and this year's winter snow run, it was a great place to wheel our Land Rovers - lots of granite rock for traction and challenges, and the view at the look-out tower was fantastic!

For some of you who have not been to Bald Mountain and want to check it out, or who wants to return and help maintain this trail, this is your chance:

“Tread Lightly” is urgently seeking VOLUNTEERS for an important project in the Sierra National Forest on the Bald Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trail in California. Plenty of press will be there to record your hard work, so we need a great showing! Volunteers will be needed to help clear a short trail re-route and also to help fence off some areas. We will also be digging holes, laying pipe, pouring cement and filling in holes. Let help maintain Bald Mountain OHV trail.

Plenty of press will be there to record your hard work, so we need a great showing!

Maps/Links to Bald Mtn Areas: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sierra/projects/ohv/pdfs/roadsrestriction-map5.pdf

Vehicle and Personal Item Requirements: Open to all stock vehicles. No wheeling; just volunteer work to do trail maintenance work at Bald Mountain. However, make sure to bring the personal items: work gloves, safety glasses, hat, sun block, bug spray, a light rain jacket or poncho (just in case it rains), work shirt, work pants, work boots or foot wear, a day or belt pack, hand sanitizer, water and a shovel.* Also, be sure to wear boots of some type, preferably a hiking boot, while working on the trail.

Summary: just go this invite from Tread Lightly last week so I hope (despite short notice) we have enough folks to make a good showing. I know Leigh, Gary and I are interested! Cool!

Anyone else! Will be good PR with Tread Lightly, other participating 4x4 clubs and the press attending this event!

Optional NCLR Club Activities:

Camping Thursday nite July 31, and Friday nite Aug 1 at Camp Edison.

Optional wheeling on Bald Mountain Saturday Aug 2.

These options are not part of Tread Lightly program instead NCLR's; all NCLR rules and guidelines apply therefore!

Just gauging interest on this thread to see how many folks would be interested in coming so I can finalize/adj plans for this trip; official trip thread and details coming once approved by NCLR.

Thanks! :)

Ron,
I don't have permission to access those pictures.

Also in my blog (click my sig) there are some of both the summer and winter runs.

Gary,
if I am not logged in it asks me to do so and after logging in I get:

Ok, my bad! Gary and I were chatting! Figured out what was wrong!

Here are the pictures; nothing beats uploading vs links!

Enjoy!

Hopefully pictures will get you guys to go! :)

PS - nice blog David; that was memorable family wheeling/camping trip both the summer trip to Shaver Lake/Bald Mtn, and snow run!

i'm interested. this is my last week at work then i've got 2 week before starting new job in august so this sounds perfect.

Cool phil!

Are you interested in just the day trip Friday Aug 1 (power it thru the Bay Area to Bald Mtn)? Perhaps continue on to S. Cal or Vegas next day - more fun before you start new work.

Or do you want to camp Friday night, and wheel the RRS next morning Saturday w/us? You'd be the first RRS that I've seen to wheel Bald Mtn. Pretty cool IMO!

Gary did it on his LR3 w/mods, and Rovertech18 on bone stock LR3 - both did well untouched/not damaged (fyi)!

I have one camping spot confirmed on Thursday, and Friday nights at Camp Edison. My site can take up to 2 (max 8 people). And up to 2 vehicles and extra vehicles on the overflow parking. Camp Edison is one of the best modern campsites in Shaver Lake IMO: clean and well maint campsites, hot shower avail if you need it after working hard on the trail, electrical outlets (for the margarator :)), wireless connection, etc...

So far Leigh is interested in camping! Gary is interesting in camping - lodging TBD, and you phil! Let me know your plans!

This is great thus far!

Also here's the link to Tread Lightly Club Members (listed in alpha order); our NCLR club name and club website proudly listed: http://www.treadlightly.org/page.php/members-view/Member-View.html?m=5

Hummers are going to be there (they are paying for the breakfast and lunch on Friday Aug 1), and local Jeep clubs.

I also very interested in learning to manage a trail maint program; wanted (in the future) have our own NCLR Trail Recreation Rescue to be funded by corp sponsors!

i'm definitely up for camping friday night and wheeling on saturday. i got some added protection for the sport and haven't taken it on the trail yet. not sure if i'll come thursday night or not. how far is the drive? if it's too much trouble to get there by 8am fri, i'll camp thurs too.

Nice phil! Good way to put those added protections e.g. sliders to use @ Bald Mtn. I have a camp site already confirmed for Friday Nite. Me, you and Leigh can share the spot (just have to pitch the tent and good to go).

If you are coming from the Fremont, CA Area, plan on a 4 hrs (or about 200 miles) driving Friday. So leave before 4am to be @ Base Camp by 8am to kick-off the Tread Lightly Recreation Rescue. I will carry a portable CB (channel 7) in case you roll-in later.

Nice to get there on time, and hear the kick-off speach - feel the spirit of the efforts when the program! Plus breakfast!

With that said, I have a camp site booked Thursday nite if you don't want to do all that driving Friday morning.

I am planning on leaving the Bay Area Thursday noon (or earlier if I get my work done) to register and setup camp so when possible Leigh or you come in Thursday afternoon or even late nite Thursday, camp is set-up already. And Cold Heineken waiting for you guys! :D

There is a Tread Lightly Awareness session Thursday 7-8pm (30 mins from Camp Edison); but understand it's "awareness level" and I'm good at that level. I was hoping it was the Tread Lightly Train the Trainer session, but it wasn't plus rather get settled in camp, relax and enjoy - ready for work next day Friday!

So far we have:
- Possibly Gary can go
- Leigh - yes
- Phil - yes

Anyone else?

If you want it to be a day trip Friday and just help on the trail, feel free - you're welcome. Also consider carpooling/share cost of gas for the trip.

Phil.

yikes! 4 hours. not really up to making that drive so if it's cool, i'll camp w/ ya on thurs too. now i gotta gear up. all i've got is a 4 person tent, but i think i can borrow a 2 person tent from a friend who happens to live near you, ron.

RON CT110

That's what I said too Yikes! 4hrs. Camping Thursday is better - avoid Friday a.m. traffic.

Good to hear you can camp Thursday; perhaps we can talk about caravan w/Leigh and any others as we get closer to Aug 1!

Hey if your friend lives near me; I can pick-up that two-man tent and bring it to Camp Edison. I am bringing my tent cot (solo) otherwise I would offer you a room/space - but then again, I snore so not a good thing for you!

Just arrange it with our friend and pm me the details - glad to pick it up for you. Also go thru your list of needs/want (gears), and if I have it e.g. lantern, glad to share e.g. stove.

Unless this your ticket to get gear(s) (which is always my excuse), have fun shopping! Jet Boil is cool; I have one!

Looks like a VERY cool event. Unfortunately (READ:FORTUNATELY) I just started a new job and time off will be impossible. With Blue Lakes on Saturday, working in Seattle Sunday through Friday then try to put together the Calaveras run the next Saturday, I'll need a little down time!! Have fun and nice representing the club Boy's!!!!!!!

Hey congrats on the new job!

Now does that mean the "LR3 Mods" budget is back! Do I hear rock sliders next.... :D

Seattle - what a commute! :) Just image: take hwy 5N, 12 hrs and 810 miles later, exit.... Must have the gallon size commuter mug! :D

NP! Understand downtime needed.

Speaking of downtown, I was hoping to wrap-up a sales proposal (work related) this week yet unfinished as of today (due next week), I'm not going to make it to Blue Lakes this wknd (I say this since you are going; please pass on to Stevenmd and the gang; will PM him as well).

Darn w/Conal coming up, and the usual suspects you, Dan and others. Gonna miss the fun @ Blue Lakes this wknd. Say hello to the gang for me. But gotta take care of first thing first (the job that pays the bills and LR mods/trips :D).

Ok, unpack the food (back to the fridge), burn the midnight oil for work, and time to focus on Bald Mtn trip next!

Atleast, I have the Tread Lightly Bald Mtn trip coming up Aug 1 to keep me going (carrot) since I will miss Blue Lakes.

Ok, catch up with you on the next trip! Happy Trails!

Hi Ron!

We are soooo thrilled that you and your club members will be able to attend the project!

I just got another email from a big off-road publication that will be there, so we are so happy to have such good volunteer representation from your club.

You’ll also receive a free t-shirt for being a part of the workday.

Re: Tread Lightly Awareness course Thursday night, it will be a little more in depth and more interactive, and we’d love to have you there. I’ll make sure Mary (instructor) slips in some stickers for those in attendance.

Thanks again Ron!
