It's time to sign up for the Deer Valley and Slick Rock trails. The trip is planned for July 19 & 20. There should be no snow and plenty of skeeters by then.:D Gary will update the NCLR home page and trip page and I will update this post with all new/relevant information as it develops.
The plan is to meet at the North end of the trail Saturday morning at 8:30am (N38°36.480 W119°55.523), run the trail North to South starting at 9:00am, camp at the South end, then run Slick Rock on Sunday. Those of you that show up earlier than 8:30am are more than welcome to find my campsite.
I will be camping in the Upper Blue Lakes campgrounds Friday night, July 18 if anyone cares to join me and not have to drive so far Saturday morning. In the event Upper Blue Lakes is full (no reservations), I will be at Lower Blue Lakes campground, then on to Blue Lakes Dam campground if Lower is full.
Camping Saturday night will be a local campground on Hwy 4. Most of them are first come, first serve, ranging approximately $20 per night. I will bring a list and directions to at least 7 or 8 campgrounds. Since we are arriving late Saturday afternoon, we may have to scout out a few to handle all of us. Should not be a big deal.
Vehicle requirements: front and rear recovery points, fire extinguisher, decent lift if you don't want trail rash, non-street tires.
This is not a "let's see how fast we can do this trail" type of run. It is expected that we have patience with each other, etc. The number one thing to remember is to have fun.... oh, and safety...:D

any word on the recce???
with me mum just having had surgery, i have no sitter for brooklyn so i can make a recce trip. i have run deer valley before, as well as many of those going on the trip, that i am comfy not doing a recce. i have never run slick rock but i place that one in gary's hands as he has done it before.
while i consider a recce a "must-do" item for an organized club run, i realize that it won't always happen due to hectic work schedules and home life. luckily, i have backup for the weekend of the actual run as far as baby-sitting goes.
my biggest concern is finding a sufficient place to camp friday and saturday nights.

best wishes for your mom. hope it isn't too serious - your family, especially your dad, doesn't need that.
my biggest concern is finding a sufficient place to camp friday and saturday nights.
is it really gonna be an issue? are you concerned the potential spots will be filled?
whoever gets up there the earliest should do what they can to secure sites. is it first-come-first-served?

The campsites around Blue Lakes open up around July 1 but I am more concerned about a campsite to hold us all Saturday night. I am looking into it now.

Pending some staffing help I am in for this run. I plan on going up Saturday morning. I live in Sutter Creek and it is on the way to Blue Lakes. If anybody wants to use the winery as a rally point for the trip up on Saturday, then let me know.
Besides the GPS points, is there a place location where to meet on Saturday morning?

OK everyone, need some input here:
1 - How many plan to camp Friday night? (will update in post #1)
2 - How many plan to camp Saturday night? (will update in post #1)
3 - There is a slight chance Gary (PCRover) might not make this trip. If this is the case, I will not be leading Slick Rock as an official part of this trip. (That doesn't mean we can't do it though). So here are our options:
A - we can camp in the Lake Alpine area Friday night and run Deer Valley from South to North, camp at the PG&E meadow half way through the trail, finish it up Sunday morning, then play around in the area, etc. (we could add on the Calaveras Dome trail to take us back to hwy 4???)
or
B - stick to our plan and camp in the Blue Lakes area Friday night, run Deer Valley from North to South, camp in the Lake Alpine area Saturday night, possibly run Slick Rock...
If Gary is not coming along, I prefer Plan A but I am open to either route. Please post opinions by Wednesday July 9.
Thanks,
Steven

I vote plan "b". It seems like the Deer Valley trail is pretty short so we should have plenty of time to get through and set up camp and maybe even do a little recce of Slick Rock. I definitley want to see Slick Rock so we know how it is and we have plenty of trucks with the capability. What time do you plan on arriving friday? Are you bringing the boys?

i am trying to take friday off, if not, i will at least leave early. i'd like to arrive at camp no later than 2 or 3pm if possible, give the boys (yup, bringing all 3 boys) some time to run around and explore, etc. if we camp at blue lakes friday, maybe play around the lake or something.
originally, i had not wanted to run blue lakes without gary but i am open to running it or at least recce part of it with you and anyone else who wants to come.

There is the possibility I could do Blue Lakes with you Friday South to North as a Recce? You could then camp Friday night at Blue Lakes and take the group North to South Saturday as planned? What do you think?

I will be taking the day off Friday and am hoping for a morning start. Should put me up there mid-afternoon at the latest. Don't know the area so will hope someone else is up there then or who might want to meet on hwy 4 somewhere near or at the intersection with the turnoff for Blue Lakes.

Thank you for the info and camp site offer, especially as i have no idea how late i will be arriving.
Yes a 1997 Willow Green P38, owned the truck since it was a year old, now with 130K.
The mods to date include the following.
OME springs and shocks, 33 inch tires, Southdown gas, rear, front and steering guards, sliders, safety devices rack and ladder, factory winch mount and front brush guard, 4.6 engine, Trutracs front and rear, Tom woods front DD driveshaft, custom Panhard rods, Hardwired ViAir compressor and power inverter, Odyssey 2150 Battery, painless acessory fuse box, JKS sway bar dis connects, lengthened stainless brake hoses and shock mounts etc
It may not be the most practical LR, and it does require a lot of maintenance, but i have always liked the body style of the P38, performs well on the trail with great axle articulation, and is comfortable (mine less so) for 3 people and the dog on those 7 hour freeway drives to reach the trail head.

Hey Conal, likewise; look forward to seeing you again on the trail. This time I'm bringing a "water proof" vehicle on this trip! :D
Are you traveling with your son? I am planning to bring my eldest Max (6 years old) on this Blue Lakes/Deer Valley trip.
Again, thanks for your help/the ride when my old D1 died on me during the water crossing on the Mojave trip. Book is token of appreciation - looks like it will be put into good use on this trip!
Also I need to reconcile with the Gate Keeper on this Deer Valley/Blue Lake trip - last year, I broke an axle shaft on my D1.
And sorry to hear about the slipped liner; looks like you are now back on the road again to do more wheeling trips! Cool!
And for old time sake, I am bringing one of items from the Mojave trip after trail/camp fire dinner treat - ice cold Watermelon this time filled with Skyy Vodka! :D

Steve and Dan-
Thank you so much for you offers, I really appreciate them. The main reason for not going is the money spent for fuel is needed for the ABS sensor repair. That and the steering wheel alignment after last weekend.
I did mention that I have a sensor from my '92 RRC parts rig. Not absolutely positive but I think it'll work on your Disco and installation is a snap, should take about 10 mintutes total, most of which is removing and replacing the wheel so you can get to the little bugger easier although it can be done with the wheel in place. I'll be in SF this Saturday for a gig, I can bring it with me...let me know.
And you'd probably want to wait till after the trip to get an alignment done anyway...:D

Hmm, I'll look into seeing if that sensor will work. When I was at Cerrone's getting the codes read, Frank said there is an updated sensor that is available. If the RRC one works I'm willing to try it out. I'm not sure what my schedule is on Sat. yet, what does yours look like Dan?
edit: I posted the compatibility question on another board and was told they are totally different. Also, the updated version now connects directly to the ecu.

My sensor, or my schedule?:D
I have to be in Sausalito at 3:30 pm, before then I'm available. I can come down to the Bay Area pretty much any time on Sat.
I was just doing a little research to determine if my sensor actually will fit or not. The one site I've found them on so far shows two different part numbers for the RRC up to '92 and the Disco 1, but they show the same pic for both. I'll keep looking...
ON EDIT: Not looking too good...I may have been erroneous in my assumption that it would be the same. But you might send a PM to Cambo, I think he's parting a Disco...

If it is not too much trouble i would appreciate having a camp site reserved, thank you. I will be using a rooftop tent and if they allow 2 vehicles per site i have no problem sharing. Even if everything goes according to plan i would not be arriving until 9pm.

Looking forward to the trip, it has been 5 years since i ran any trails around Tahoe. James will be with me as usual, and as any 10 year old should be, he is enamored by the CT Trucks after spending some time in steves BCS CT110 and my "previous life".
The slipped liner was a real PITA, i was displaying all the symptoms on the Mojave Road trip, but i still went ahead and changed the head gaskets myself only to have my original suspicions/ diagnosis confirmed, and the engine replaced. One of these days I will take the time to build up a spare engine with Top Hat liners or figure out a way to convert a RR classic to TDi and register it in CA.
I read about your gatekeeper adventures, ( i carry spare axle assemblies).:)

No kidding ! my truck with the RTT has the aerodynamics of a brick. I'll be changing the plugs, air filter and oil and even troubleshooting the cruise control (which has not worked for at least 5 years) I'll also try resetting the adaptive "values" and clean the MAFS and O2 sensors. If i keep my speed to around 60mph with the 33" 's my fuel consumption is only slightly less horrendous.
I'll be bringing our English Cocker Spaniel and i think there is an additional charge for a dog at the campsite.
If you are able to reserve a campsite when you arrive great, and i can always share it with anyone else who needs a spot. Otherwise knowing i have a guaranteed spot to set up after the drive is much appreciated and I'll gladly split the $ and a beer i hope, or even better one of Rons infamous watermelon creations.

We will be hitting the gatekeeper from the North end so it should be a lot easier... however, if time allows, we can always "play" on it at the end of the day.
Oh... and I'll bring enough beer so I don't have to split one with you... you can have your own bottle...:D ...just watch out for Griff... he tends to drink it all!:cool:

Easy! Just move up to a Northern county! Up here, you only smog a vehicle when it changes legal owners and you have to DMV it. If you live up here and have a vehicle already in your name, do whatever you want to it and you don't have to smog it till you sell it. Of course, it's still not exactly legal...

Sasquatch, if your planning on driving through Jackson on the way up, then we could caravan if you want to. My GPS is broken so a little help in finding the trailhead would be great. Can somebody post directions to the trailhead?
From the first page:
"The plan is to meet at the North end of the trail Saturday morning at 8:30am (N38°36.480 W119°55.523), run the trail North to South starting at 9:00am, camp at the South end, then run Slick Rock on Sunday. Those of you that show up earlier than 8:30am are more than welcome to find my campsite."
Also, does anybody going to Blue Lakes have a CB tuner? I think that I need to dial in my antenna. Range is only about 1/4 mile.
Looking forward to the trip.

Stefano, I've suggested to Ron that he bring his SWR meter since I need to check my CB as well.
And...I'm still trying to get a handle on where this place is myself so I can plan my route from Clear lake. Got at least three places that I know of where they're doing road construction that I have to work around. Planning to leave Clear Lake by 2:00 pm Friday, earlier if I can swing it, and I'm just guessing at about 4-5 hours drive for me so that makes my ETA about 6:00 or 7:00pm. My crappy GPS won't let me enter a destination by using Lat./Long. coordinates...
So from Sac. I guess I take hwy. 50 to hwy. 89, and then to hwy. 88? Or can someone suggest a better route?
Anyone else planning to be on the road from the Sac. area at around 4:00 pm?

Here is the way from the Bay Area. Take what ever to get to highway 99, then go to SR88, exit freeway and head east. The turn off of SR88 to Blue Lakes is a ways past Kirkwood but before SR89.
50 is way out of the way for me anyway, might work for you somehow.

If anyone is coming up 88E then take this shortcut. This is the route all the skiers take. It will save you 10-15 minutes since you will not have to drive down into the Jackson valley and back out again:
88E to your first light in Amador county, Ridge Road make a left. Stay straight over 49. Go past Avio Vineyards & Winery on your right (my place). 2 miles past Avio, Ridge splits to the left. Stay on Ridge. It runs back into 88 make a left. This bypasses Jackson. The good/cheapest place to fuel up is at the Safeway gas station. At the intersection of Ridge & 49 make a right. Safeway is .5 mile on the right at the light. So are a few fast food joints.
Sasquatch, and anybody else going up Saturday morning can meet at my place at 7:00. Just drive on down to the house past the tasting room. Everybody else is welcome to stop on the way up today. The Tasting Room is open until 5:00. Avio was just voted "Best Wine in the County" (Shameless plug"):D
My cell number is 209-217-7115.

Got back late last night and too tired to post anything (behind the wheel from 4:30am to 11:00pm). Day runs are brutal!! The trail was in pretty good condition overall. Going North to South sure made things easier. We had 9 total vehicles and only encountered a few small groups of heeps and yotas. The main log jamb happened at the "Tree". It's a sketchy, off-camber piece that has high side roots and forces you to the tree. This is where we met a group of three heeps who were unable (unwilling) to back down. Half of our group squeezed past them and the other half backed up the trail by a few hundred feet.
The squeeze was REALLY spooky because one of the heeps chose this spot to pull off trail. Mike (Monty) barely got past without any damage (I don't think he knew how close it really was!!) The two vehicles nearly kissed. They finally made it past us and our up-hill group descended down to the tree. This is where it got interesting. I took the low line and got through no problem. Griff took the high line with equal success. Steven took the high line and flopped it on it's side. Everyone was fine and no arms managed to poke out through the low-side windows. Steven and his 3 kids were safe but a little shook up.
The club was outstanding in quickly organizing and formulating the plan of attack to safely put the rubber side back down. A couple of snatch-blocks, fore and aft anchors and we were in business. The only damage was a dented fuel door area and water from his cooler everywhere!
Overall it was another successful NCLR event of epic proportions. Hopefully others will add in on the photos and theres even some video of Stevens recovery. The couple of rigs from SCLR were very nice and the owners were even nicer!!:D Speaking of nice,...I still have the FRS radio that was loaned to me on the trail. PM me and I'll ship it down to you! Sorry, I was tired and my rig was a mess!!
On another positive note - this was the 1st time the LR3 didn't have a single suspension fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a GOD!!!!

Dave, wow x3! Amazing trip from reading your post; Stevenmd's rig flopped but good to hear that nobody was hurt especially his kids, and good news about not having fault code(s) come up!
Look at the photos, looks like Steven's kids quickly recovered also (smile/tongue sticking out) after the incident.
Hate it when there are unwilling fellow wheelers on the trail. Encountered that at Shaver Lake Snow Run (well, you were there)! Glad that Monty (in law enforcement) is off-duty and a calm/cool headed guy, as some of us would have fired warning shots for not moving their junk of the trail!
Get some rest and can't wait to hear/rear more! Missed out on this one!

alrighty, i came back a little early and missed today's slickrock. i had some obligations to take care of and it was easier for me to get back early. anyways, here's the pics and vid i took.
from camp, Conal's P38. awesome truck. Conal was a top notch guy to wheel with and Isabel and his son James were real troopers to make the trip from LA. great meeting you guys and Kami and i hope to wheel with you again. btw Conal, she could finally remember the proper introduction.
from L-R, Mark's DII, my DI and Dan's classic at camp
lining up for the infamous first creek crossing with Barry in the lead
of course the creek.
Dan's classic. he must be checking his coolant levels here:p
here's Dave in his lr3.
lr3 in your face.
Dan negotiating some of the smaller rocks
Conal doing the same in the p38
Stefano in his sweet 90 making short work of the obstacle that nearly got my DI into the side of a CJ5. Steven wasn't so lucky and flopped here after the jeep left.
another for good measure.

here's Dan the man at the same obstacle.
Dan shows no fear and he does not baby his rig. his classic was up for the challenge everytime.
so, the first half of the group is waiting down hill from this obstacle when all of a sudden we hear someone saying a rig was over on it's side (the CB reception was hit and miss all day. at least it worked for this). here's the end result of the hike back up. btw Steven, you knew this was coming. lol:p
everyone pitched in to help with the recovery. i guess i was too busy taking pics for your viewing pleasure to help.;)
after it was on it's wheels, the only damage noticed was a dent above the fuel fill door, slightly broken tail light lense and water leaking from the cooler (at least it wasn't his beer i suppose) the vid of the recovery is in two parts. i will post them in a little bit.
Mark's kids, Ian and Zachary, playing with Kami during the recovery.
last but not least, the gate keeper. only had room in my camera for Barry's rig (Sheila).
and since Steven refused to do the Captain Morgan's pose with his rig on it's side, this will have to suffice. lol.
good times had by all with a few bruised undercarriages, my door sill/ door, i can't wait for a return trip. it was great meeting everyone and sorry Randy, i didn't get any pics of your rig.

Great trip it was! Mike, I can't open the vids you posted. Maybe it's my machine.
I and my two boys took off from Hermit Valley Campground at 8:30 am yesterday morning. I had something to do in the afternoon so couldn't join the others for Slick Rock. I look forward to hearing how it went.
Deer Valley was awesome! It was the best wheeling I've ever had the pleasure of participating in - thanks, Steven, for setting it up. Sorry you couldn't make it, Gary. Missed your presence and gleaming red steed.
My boys and I got a late start and then proceeded to take the long way to Blue Lakes. Between construction, traffic, potty/food stops, a drop of some parts to Cambo in Lodi, and my poor decision-making, took us the better part of seven hours.
Arrived at Blue Lakes way after dark. Took us quite some time to find the group, ultimately discovering them at the last campground. Had to field questions about bears from my boys during our search for the LR clan. Made the mistake of saying that the area probably had bears... my younger son, Ian, was very concerned about that prospect. Nevertheless, nothing was spotted and, more importantly, neither boy was mauled or eaten, although with the way they were acting Saturday night and early Sunday morning, I was ready to leave them for our ursine friends.
Was an absolute delight to meet our Scottish friend, Conal, his SO, Isabel, and his well-mannered son, James. James took on the responsibility of watching my boys while I set up camp on Saturday evening. Thanks, James.
Back to the wheeling.... The trip was far away the most eventful of my short off road driving career. The trail was excellent and very doable, albeit all our trucks took some heavy bruising to their underbellies. I pretty much used every inch of steel protection and even mananged to dent my muffler slightly. Otherwise, the Disco handled the job well. It was the driver who was not always on his game.
With Barry's spotting prowess, I managed the Gatekeeper without incident (other than some sill scraping). I may have had even less had I actually listed to his direction more closely. Thanks, Barry.
Steven's experience was a bit scary, but all in all, considering what it could have been, things went really smoothly.
We almost lost Dave, too, on a section just above the Gatekeeper. His instincts prevented a roll. Thankfully, that right rear rubber stayed on the rim. Conal offered the rescue advice and I provided the stability and pull to get the LR3 back on all four. Enjoyed watching Dave from behind all day. Oh, and thanks for helping me with my little problem before heading down to "the tree."
Randy did an excellent job on his first LR excursion, at least as far as I was told. He was beaming and ready and willing to get Slick Rock under his belt as well. Good to meet you, Randy, and look forward to future trips.
Mike, wanted to mention that Kami is a real doll. You have raised a very polite and friendly little girl. I only wish my cretons were as polished.
And, I can't forget Dan. Was great watching your essentially mod-less truck walk through the obstacles. Thanks for the coffee and for singing/playing me to sleep on Sat. night. Wish I could have partaken in the campfire festivities, especially Barry's port, but once I laid down to get the boys settled, I was gone.
Hope to get my pics up soon.
Thanks to those who organized the trip and those who offered their expertise and kind assistance. Good group of folk... as usual.

This...was an awesome trip! What a blast! The write-ups thus far have been very clear and detailed so I really can't add a whole lot, but I just have to say that the trail offered all the challenge I could have hoped for, and more! The weather was beautiful, the company outstanding, and the planning that went into it was first-rate. I would do this trip again in a hot minute!
I can however, offer a little detail on Sunday's Slick Rock excursion:
After Mark and the rugrats (:D) pulled out Sunday morning, (note to self: Self, don't set up camp near Mark when he's got the boys with him if you plan on sleeping in...ain't gonna happen!:p) we were left with five Rovers with a number of the different varieties well represented; Barry's DII leading, followed by Randy's DI, then Stefano's D90, my RRC and Conal's P38 bringing up the rear. The original plan was to do Slick Rock in reverse direction starting with the Gatekeeper end and finishing up back at Alpine lake. This would have taken us down the Gatekeeper rather than up, a decidely easier direction, but up Slickrock instead of down. We discussed it after breakfast and decided to do it in the traditional direction, starting at Alpine lake and ending up with the Gatekeeper. Things went fairly smoothly (smooth being a relative term when your truck is rolling over rocks the size of a VW) most of the way. We took it slow and easy with a goal of safety first, as well as keeping damage to a minimum as several of us had quite a drive ahead of us to get home and would prefer to do it with our Rovers relatively intact.
We encountered several other vehicles on the trail, but passed each other without any of the difficulties of the previous day. Slick Rock itself was a blast. We scouted the bypass just in case, but everyone was game and so, down we all went without a hitch. Once all were safely at the bottom, I rode shotgun with Stefano while he took the awesome D90 back up it and down again-what a different feel from my RRC! Gotta get one...
The rest of the trip was uneventful (but don't get me wrong here, it was a lot of fun and hard work to negotiate all the obstacles in the trail) till we got to the Gatekeeper. We watched a couple of Jeep guys negotiate it, the first one in a CJ-thingy wound up taking the easier granite slab path to the left after failing several attempts to get up the steps. His buddy with the highly modded Cherokee made it look easy-it wasn't. Barry's rig was the first of our group to go through, with Lori at the wheel spotted by Barry. It took a bit of work to get up to the stair steps, but she made it beautifully...that's when the real work began. In the midst of one attempt the left rear wheel wedged against a rock and we heard a metallic snapping sound, accompanied by a loss of power to the rear wheels. Conal's diagnosis: probably broken spider gear(s) if not an axle. The CJ driver (a former Rover owner himself) quickly came to the rescue and Barry's truck was pulled the rest of the way to the top.
Next was Stef, who made it look easy with the D90. The rest of us took the easier granite slab path to the left. I, for one, could see that my truck simply didn't have enough ground clearance to get over the steps. In fact, I had difficulties in the first section and had to be spotted through by Stefano (thanks, buddy!)
After a break and photo op at the bridge we headed up the last section of the trail only to find that Barry's now front-wheel-drive DII couldn't quite make it up a very rocky portion of the trail. We reshuffled position so that Randy was in front of him, and after a few attempts he was successful at pulling Barry through. It was a bad spot; I barely made it though myself and thought for a minute that I was going to need a spotter again.
We aired up at the top and parted ways, Conal had a long drive back to L.A. ahead of him and Barry wanted to get going as well. Randy, Stefano and I had a bite to eat and then headed back ourselves. Randy, still not having had enough, suggested a short cutoff that he knew of that was a quick, easy little mile or so through the woods and out to pavement, probably even saved us a little time as well as being fun. Randy dropped out at Arnold and Stef and I parted ways at Jackson. I went on out 49 to 16 and back to Sac, that proving to be much faster than the drive that I took coming up Friday.
I didn't get all the pics I would have liked, I had a resolution problem with my camera that ate up all my memory by the end of the first day. As soon as I get everything downloaded, sorted and uploaded, I'll post what I do have.
Again, great trip, great folks, great Rovers, great trails...all in all it was...(you guessed it): Great!
Really nice to meet and wheel with you folks that I hadn't met before, (Conal, Isabel and James, Barry and Lori) and good to renew old(er) acquaintances as well (Steven et.al, Mark and the Holy Terrors of the Trail, Mike and Kami, Stefano, Randy, Big Dave and Lorin. For those of you who were signed up but had to beg off at the last minute, (Gary, Ron, Cameron, Ben) know that you were missed.
Special mention must be made here of Randy. For his first trip, he handled the trail like a seasoned veteran. He took direction well and was willing to tackle anything and everything, and his enthusiasm knew no bounds. He had a blast and it showed (not to mention that he just wouldn't shut up about it!:D)
I'd run any trail with you any time, bud! And that goes for the rest of you, as well!
Steven, sorry that you left early but I understand. Thanks for putting together a great trip, sorry it didn't turn out as well as you would have liked for you personally but the main thing is that everyone in your truck was okay. Let's do it again, but leave out that one part...

This years Blue Lakes trip was as usual... EPIC. Every year I run this trail it's a new experience, especially running the trail in a "non-traditional" North to South route. Thanks for taking the lead and getting this event together Steven! As always, NCLR is a great bunch of Rover enthusiasts to hang with both on the trail and around a campfire! Speaking of campfire...tip 'o the hat to Dan for his excellent guitar playing & songs which Lori (;) ) and I really enjoyed Saturday night.
Running Slickrock on Sunday continued the fun. Prior to this trip, Sheila was two for three (unassisted) exiting the gate-keeper. It was not to be this time around. A sharp metallic sounding crack... then a complete loss of power to the rear wheels. Unfortunately, I had recently removed the GBR HD half-shafts (for the 03 project) and replaced with the OE units. THANK YOU Randy, really appreciated your effort to tow me uphill over those remaining rock gardens. I now have say without hesitation, my "best mod ever " is CDL. The only reason Lori and I made it home Sunday night was because of CDL-High engaged... for 192 miles!

(note to self: Self, don't set up camp near Mark when he's got the boys with him if you plan on sleeping in...ain't gonna happen!:p)
i know you're only chiding me, dan, but i do owe you a bit of an apology for a lack of thought when setting up so close to your tent (both nights). i'll be sure to bring some socks soaked in ether for each boy next time.

Could not agree more :)
Thanks you to all who helped organize and lead this trip and for the very warm NCLR welcome.
Glad you made it back safely Barry- i seriously now need to look into the hot water / shower set up.
Posted some pictures at http://spaces.msn.com/conalmack from Saturday. Still trying to catch up with work.

This trip was everything I expected, and so much more.:D As Dan said, I could not get enough of the wheelin' adventure. Besides the excellent trails, I have to say the NCLR members are the best. Going into this trip, I had only met a few of this classy clan at Mexxi's, and now can say I feel like I have made new friends.
Barry and Lori, thanks for the lines for me to follow, the tug and keeping the diffs clear of obstacles. When I was paid attention, all went well. I have to try the shower next time (note to self - don't wash down stream from Stephano and Dan)
Stephano, it was reassuring to look in my mirrors and see your D90 there if needed. I also enjoyed sharing the cook fire, and thanks for sharing the wine and food. I appreciated the spot at Gatekeeper on Slickrock even though I went left.
Dan, you worked the Classic like a pro and the singing is even better. I would run a trail with you anytime, and hope to soon.
Steve, thanks for putting together a memorable trip and welcoming me the first night (also I didn't think I would see a rollover first time out).
Conal, Isabel and James, great meeting all of you and I admire the lengths you went to be on this trip. I have taken notes on the spare items needed for the trail, and thanks for the advice.
Mike, Kami is a doll. Nice truck, and I enjoyed our conversations and hope to see you on another trip soon.
Dave, I am sorry I missed your little adventure right before Gatekeeper. Did anyone get pictures? It sounds like you handled the situation well, nice.
Mark, the boys are exactly what I remember of my two boys at that age. Actually, they are still like that now.

Conal, truly excellent pics! I know Isabel took most of them and she did a great job! I think I saw both you and James with the camera a few times as well...good stuff there, all of you!

Mark, your boys are great...they're just at that age, that's all. They'll grow out of it. No apology neccessary. Good to see them getting a little wheeling in their blood at an early age. You just need to bring along a babysitter to run interference for you so they don't wear you down...

Conal, the pics turned out great. kudos to you, Isabel and James for taking so many. i definately need a bigger memory card for mine so i can take more pics and vids.
thanks for the kind words about kam guys'. she really enjoyed the trip and i know she would love to go out again. as for a babysitter Dan, it seems to help to have other ankle biters on the trip to help out with that. the kids can play while the adults kick back and relax a bit.

:D Do I have to say it?
somehow i'm not surprised it was you, Cambo, that commented on this. old sasquatch is a peach of a guy.
you know it just occurred to me as i write this... i don't think i've ever been on a trip where i was one of the shorter guys. funny, LR owners seem to be taller and leaner where heepers are generally short and stout.

As you well know, I'm definitely the latter rather than the former. Does this mean I have to sell the Rover and get a Jeep?

no, dan, you do not have to sell your RRC and get yourself a heep. my comment does not apply to you because you are far taller than most of us when it comes to the strength of your character and your commitment to the LR lifestyle.

Dan
Coming from one of those "taller" LR owners, i agree it does not apply and
just to say the *** winch, when i replace it is yours if you want it, (just have to figure out getting it to you) It works as you saw last weekend, but is really slow.
A pleasure to meet you and everyone else:), and the singing / guitar playing was a perfect end to a great day. Thanks again for the hospitality.

Hey everyone,
First and foremost, let me thank Barry and his SO for taking the lead on the trail. Barry is a great trail leader and it was an honor to follow him.
Second, thanks to everyone who showed up! Conal for a long-*** drive and Mark for eventually finding us! As for the rest of the Holligans, thanks as well.
Third, thanks to everyone for being understanding when I headed off for home Saturday night. Even though my boys weren't really shaken up from the tip over and not a whole lot of damage was done, I was sort of shaken up as a dad - the whole idea of "what could have happened" was running through my mind. I needed to feel the safety of home. Those of you that know me well know my kids always come first. So thanks! (Although my boys were insistent that they want to do it again...)
Fourth, to address the tip over issue... after reviewing all the pics it only comes down to "driver error" in two areas:
1 - too much weight on top. I had the spare tire, the sleeping bags, and a box of misc items on the roof rack. The sleeping bags and misc box of items were fairly light but that 285/75 tire was not! I am actively looking for a rear bumper that can hold a tire. I had no choice in putting in on the roof this trip due to having my truck packed with 3 kids and gear - although if I do another trip prior to obtaining the rear bumper, I'll tie it down in the rear cargo area somehow and put other light weight stuff on the rack.
2 - right before I tipped over it looked like I was turning to the left and that put the passenger side front tire at a bad angle - when the other front tire popped up onto the root the was nothing for the truck to lean on as the passenger side front tire was turned inwards.
Overall, I loved the trip, my boys had a great time and I hope to do a day run before the winter season... I have a score to settle.

Thanks again for warm NCLR hospitality and a great trip.
I think you assessed the "flop" accurately, absolutely understand your concerns and emotions as a parent afterwards.
I had followed you most of the day, and only managed to get myself temporarily high centered and cross axled when i had tried a different line from yourself through some of the more challenging spots. Thanks for the tug:)
Thanks again to Barry, (Isable really wants the hot water / shower, it really made a tremendous difference)
