Hello all,

Currently signed up for the trip are the following people

Leigh Askew - Trip Leader (Camping)
Michael McClung - First Aid Leader (Staying in Hotel)
Mark Pangilinan (Non Camper)
David Badillo (Camping)
Steven MD (Going Home)
Eric (Possible, going home)

Trip details can be found at http://nclrclub.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=126&Itemid=111

Yesterday I performed a solo Recce of the trail.
The trail is generally in good condition and we can make easy progress. I hit a few small pockets of snow some passable others required a fun recovery sessions.
Unfortunately towards the end of the Alleghany Trail right before it reconnects with the North Bloomfield trail we have a large section (1/2 of mile) of deep snow that does not look like it will be clear by the 17th. As the day was getting late and I was on my own I decided against trying to travel the 1/2 mile via multiple 100' winch pulls. I doubled back and did not have time to recce the the section of North Bloomfield or Henessy pass I intended to run back to highway 89 and return to civilization.

Question to the group is what type of Vehicles do you drive, are you lifted and how many are winch equipped.
Also is everyone planning on Camping on the trail or will some be leaving for Hotels or just spending the Saturday with the group.

I see a couple of options
1. Run the trail and battle through the snow at the end of the trail then take the remainder of the North Bloomfield and Henessy pass.
2. Run the trail to the snow and then turn around and head back then take the remainder of the North Bloomfield and Henessy pass.
3. Delay the trip another month to see if conditions improve.

I am up for all of these possibilities, If the group size remains small then all can be possible easily. We can also make the decision on the trail once we get there. Just want everyone to know what they are getting into.

I am not sure if i will have the time to recce the parts of the trail I did not complete so we may have a surprise or two there.

'Morning Leigh,

I'm up for plowing some snow. LR3 / moderate lift / winch equipped. I'll camp where ever we choose. GF + 2 kids in tow. Let me know if you want to sneak out during the week to further recce(sp). I am NOT in favor over postponing the trip. I need this getaway!!!!

David,

I am swamped at work, no chance I can do a mid week recce. Possibly next weekend on Sunday 11th, I will know later in the week. I would want to run the parts I did not run.

I will keep you posted.

I am RRC 2" lift, Front skid, sliders and diff guard.

NO WINCH at this time.

We are staying at the La Quinta Old Sac on Friday night and Sat night. Sunday is the Brit Car show, so dirty truck is good for me! However, I don't want something like Shaver with wife and baby in tow.

If we do decide to run it, which I am in favor of, everyone will need to have sleeping bags, blankets and if possible a portable heater along with spare water and such. If we decide to run the snow, there may be a lot of sitting/idleing and I know I will be carrying at least 5 gal extra fuel now (which should give me 50 miles). And snow shovels if you have them.

I say continue the run. If we get there and the snow is still deep, we can make a run at it. If it is too difficult, we can turn around and head back. As long as we don't committ to many trucks, we should be fine to abort...

Option 2 sounds like there is a bypass? Is this so?

Also, before the 1/2 mile snow, howmany miles are we already on the trail for?

is this a camping trip or a one day trip?

SFDiscoII

I would agree that bringing camping supplies is a good idea for this or any trip you never know what we are going to come across or what will happen on the trial to delay our journey. This trail is pretty easy going regarding gas. I ran the whole trail front and back on 1/4 tank. Never hurts to have extra gas though.

As far as camping, I plan to camp on Saturday night.

I will try to run the parts of the trail I could not last weekend this Sunday to better decided on our best options, in the past the section with snow was the only main problem. The remainder is most likely clear of snow however I want to make sure before we to commit to avoid a full on snow trip.

Mike, I will look at the maps again either later tonight or later in the week to figure out the best way to get you out for the return to Sac for your hotel.

No bypass, the Alleghany trail is a loop which starts and ends on the North Bloomfield road trail. If we want we can complete the trail front and back and then run the small section of the North Bloomfield trail to get to the Camp site. Once we get the group to the campsite I planned on running anyone back to civilization who was not camping before getting back to camp to enjoy a beverage or three.

Next day I had planned on running North Bloomfield out to join Henesey pass to 89.

You can do either, camping on Saturday or return to home.

Hope you can make it.

Leigh - since I will have all the kids in tow, how long is it to the trailhead from the Sacramento area? (I figure I am about an hour from Sacramento). IIRC, I think I first met you when we ran this trail a few years ago when Mike M. lead it.

I think your right about meeting you on that trip.

I just MapQuested Ripon (i think that is where you live) to the Grass Valley gas station we are meeting at, it works out at 2 hours.

Not sure if my kids are coming, My youngest came this weekend and had fun counting the critters we came upon.

Actually, since we are going to the all Brit meet on Sunday too, it works out well for us! The whole weekend rooms, both nights, like $115. Sure as heck will make that Sat roll out and return that much easier!

I should know more after tommorow. Not sure with a group.

I ran the trail in both directions, from the gas station meeting point to getting back to main roads with some winching fun in approx 8 Hours although I did not pay that much attention.
I move pretty quick on my own.

I will try and post a better update when I see the trail on the other side of the big snow section. I will then decide which trail run option is better for the group. I think we have some campers, some hotel/going home people.

Okay people,

I just returned from a second solo Recce (well I did have my two boys along as co-pilots).

I ran the N Bloomfield trail to the other side of the snow I hit on the Alleghany trail last week. So I know we can easily do everything up to the snow on both sides. It seems like the amount of snow is not going to stop a small determined group of Land Rovers:cool:.

I did try to run the remainder of N Bloomfield to Henessy pass and hit even more snow on that trail. All is clear until you pass Graniteville and try crossing the Poorman Creek, getting on and off the bridge was a challenge. Once I cleared that I had several areas of snow that I needed to winch through and after a while decided not to push my luck and continue on solo.

I am thinking that best bet for next Saturday is to run Alleghany in reverse, hit the snowed in area early in the day when everyone is fresh. This will also have the advantage of bring us back close to the beginning of the trail at the South Yuba Bridge crossing we start from. This will allow a safe return for the non campers.

The original camp grounds I selected are beyond the snowed in section of N Bloomfield, so it looks like our best options for camping will be either the South Yuba Campground or a nicer one looked like the Chute Hill camp.

I will look into reservations, it looks like it's just me and David up for camping. Anyone change their mind let me know ASAP.

Sweet, good reece there Leigh...

So should we bring full size shovels and picks? Or does someone have a big bottle of propane and some torches we can melt snow with?

For everyone coming, throw blankets in the car, change of clothes!

I don't have a winch anymore Leigh, but I am packing my 100' sythetic line, so we could add to a winch line and have a straight 200' pull if needed.

How about running lower air pressure? Did you need to? How far is/where is air to refill if needed?

SFDiscoII
05-10-2008, 09:58 PM
Shovels would be good. Picks not sure.

I just ran with street pressure, no major obstacles other than snow.

You have a long drive on pavement to the nearest air, so either bring a compressor, CO2 or similar or just keep the air in your tires.

Never hurts to have some warm stuff and dry clothes just in case, but the section we are running should not be too bad.

Not a problem. I will do a little research and figure out how much time it will take to get to the starting location from the campsite and let you know when we need to meet....

Of course, this also means that if you will be stuck following my slow truck up the hills to Auburn, so remember that too! Maybe David can give me a push?

I will keep the hi lift handy for you! (kidding)

So, La Quinta is at : 200 Jibboom St, Sacramento, CA 95811 (La Quinta Inn-Downtown)

Meeting point: 451 E Main St, Grass Valley, CA 95945 9AM-915AM

Remarkably, 59.0 mi – about 1 hour 10 mins (With my truck, like 2 hours.....well not that bad, but lets say 1.5 hours) with cat herding...

so, we need to leave Sac by 730, so meeting at LAQ is like 7AM...not bad for me, since the baby gets up at 515am, but you guys, espcially Dave and tribe, have to leave early!

Sasq..., FYI, with AAA the rooms here are like $55 a night......we are coming up Fri night, just to knock an hour and some off the AM commute....something to think about for you....

There is also a La Quinta fat the 80/99 meeting, off of, dang it I forgot the name of that street...where lrsafari lives, but I chose the downtown one since we are going to Woodland the next day, and it is near a park and Old Sac.....

Not advocating one place over any other, La Quinta takes dogs and I get rewards, but at least friday night in Sac means easy rollout...

stevenmd
05-12-2008, 04:28 AM

Special thanks to Leigh for leading this trip.

I met up with Dave and his gang at 8 Mile Road in Stockton around 7:25am. We finally caught up with Mike and his 3.5 at the rendezvous point in Grass Valley around 9:10am. I would keep that engine if I were you Mike!:)

It was a dry and dusty trip but overall it was pretty fun. Jesse, Jacob, and Brooklyn had a blast. I wouldn't mind trying to do this trip a few weeks earlier in the year without the baby and camping. Might be kind of fun to dig through a few hundred feet - or mile or two - of snow. I bet the kids would find that fun.

Also might be fun to do this trip after the first rain but Mike did bring up the point of slick mud on some of these trails!

One note of interest: a few miles up a shelf road we ran into a guided group of 24 vehicles. The etiquette of the trail is to always back up uphill, not downhill. However, in the spirit of sportsmanship, we ended up making way for the larger group. Which probably was the best thing to do since it looked like most in the larger group were noobs, with the exception of a few built rigs. But it was pretty interesting backing down the shelf road. Thank God I started driving the tractor for my dad when I was 10!:D

Anyways, thanks again to Leigh for leading the trip. Thanks to everyone for good company.

Steven, Thanks for the kind words. Great to see you again, definitely try to camp next time. I am up for running the same trip next year earlier or after some rain to spice it up a little.

Trip was fun, amazing what a week of hot weather can do for the snow on the trail. It went from a winch -a-thon to a walk in the park.

Regarding the shelf road, I appreciate your support for my decision of having our small experienced group back down vs having the very large group of inexperienced travelers back up. I know we were a little behind schedule due my scenic detour early:o

I ran into the large group again near North Bloomfield and passed along Mike's idea to their trip leader of sending a scout ahead on a narrow shelf road to ensure it was clear of traffic before committing a large group. He was very receptive and plans on implementing this on his trips.

I think this would be wise even for a small group like ours. One truck goes through and radios back its clear while holding up traffic at the other end if necessary till the group clears the shelf road.

Till the next trip.

PS I did not bring a camera so I would really appreciate the folks that did, post a few pics.

A big Thank You goes out to Leigh for all his hard work on the trail and the multiple recce runs!! I silently kept wondering "where's all the snow?". I give him some grief back in camp when I unpacked my snow shovel. Overall it was a nice and pleasant trail run!:D
Back to that large group on the shelf road - after stopping in at the bar in Alleghany to use the facilities, they were closing at 4:40 pm. Huh?? They ran out of beer and mentioned a group of 26 jeeps came by earlier...maybe it was better that WE backed down the road!!
We took our time leaving Sunday and checked out North Bloomfield a little. Cool mining history and neat little hiking trails everywhere. We even managed to get a bit lost on the way out. I promise Leigh, I paid attention to your directions on how to get out!!!! Time to get GPS I suppose...
Thanks for a fun trip!!

This will be a busy week for Suzie and I, so pictures as soon as possible from the trip.

Few observations: First, 3.5 was a work horse...just slow on the road...in the dirt, pulls fine. Was running "upper end" hot and still it....I am thinking of checking the flow. Maybe I need to boil the radiator.

Second, scenic detours....Always good if the time permits.....I would like to go back just to hike around Short Road and see what all those rocks and trails are about... I don't think I took a picture, so I'll have to go look again...

Third: The backing up. Best call based on our driver pool. I think the most important thing is that all were safe, but when I talked to the guy at the bottom, he seemed matter of fact that we back down, and had little control over his group, as one driver almost hit Gabrielle and then, after Suzie grabbed her, almost backed into my truck. I at one point, as I tried to get Steven and I a clear path out, told the "leader" that we backed down because it was becoming clearly evident in the actions of his drivers that "control and accountability" must not be words they were taught as adults....

Fourth..Radios...I know my CB is not tuned the best, but we need to make sure that we have LONG range ability for the radios, or when we start to back down/seperate a bit, we know the plan.....back down, then decide what to do. Back down, then go forward etc. At the river, we were unsure of the plan, and did not see the other Rovers in the group....Before we start something next time, lets stop, take a breath and decide what WE plan to do...I thought everyone was backing to the river.... so if we get out of radio range, we all know what is expected next....

Fifth:

THANKS LEIGH! Although we got off track, we never were "lost", just being creative. Could always get out, but forged ahead. Dave, Mark, Steven: always a pleasure to be out on the trails with you all and your families.

Now for the Alleghany Trail photos and STICKERS>>>>

Mike,

Sorry to hear the other group almost hit your little girl. It's tough being on the trail will little ones, I am always fearfull of big trucks with blind spots and little kids not fully aware of their surrondings and vunrability. My wife and argue no end in the urban environment about my over cautious attitude towards my kids especially in parking lots. Really glad no harm came to her.

Good point on the radio range and a clearer plan regarding what we were doing. I think I made it clear that we were backing down to points that would allow others to pass by, I managed to get three of the six trucks in that type of position. It sounds like you and Steven backed all the way down to the river and unfortunately we were unable to reach each other via CB radio to let you know to come back up after the last of the other group past you.

I guess we can never rely fully on the radio's no matter CB, HAM tuned or not.
Good news is you and Steven used your common sense once the last truck passed you made your way back to the group to continue.

It was one driver, in a red heep that was the issue. I did notice that we as a group have no issues with kids/cars.....we all are very aware and careful. Maybe that because families along on trips are such a normal part of what we do.....That group had nothing more than the "what I want to do" mentalitly for drivers in the middle of the pack. Maybe them closing the bar was part of that issue...

Yes, I thougt we were going down far enough to get off trail. The only spot I could have made room in, safely, was big enough to uturn, so we did and went farther down....could not have gotten 5 trucks in there and I was unsure if you all had cleared the trail or not...

Maybe that should be a protocol. If needing to clear the trail, the first truck can notify the line when they are cleared, then so on until the last truck is the only one moving. Then we only need to back down to make room as needed. I kept backing down as I had no good spot, figured you all wouldn't either, so I was making room.....

On a good note, I am really happy with my backing downhill skills.....!

Overall, I had a great time...the wife was tired by days end, and grumpy, but I would do that again! I told Eric I could run the trail with him when his truck is ready...and I am looking forward to the Blue Lakes recce trip, alone.....
