This is a quick teaser to enjoy...just to prove we have the footage. The complete video won't be ready to process for a few more weeks. I apologize for the delay, it's been impossible to get together (as we go to different schools) which makes cooperative work difficult. We decided rushing something out would be worse than postponing its release.
To get it down to a reasonable file size, I've had to convert it to a DivX file. You may need to download a compatible player:

Wow.....I like the way the music adds to the scene changes. Josh, great meeting you this weekend at the WFA class. I think someone should nominate you guys for the official videographer for the club......
Can you add sounds under the music, like when the CT110 starts, to hear a low sound of the exhaust to punctuate the music? We need to come up with a signature run, maybe even the Oregon Run actually and have you guys get to go/do the video.
The flow of the video reminds me of the Warren Miller movies. I watch a lot of those, and mt bike movies and such, but there is something magical about the WM movies in the way they just progress, and I get the same feeling from your clips too. Some of the CT videos have it, others just dont...hard to explain I guess, since it is a feeling....
Anyway, wasn't able to be there and participate, but I would love to see the video and I think it should be added to the year end show at Hollister if we can....

Very well done Josh! We need to commission you to put together a "NCLR" DVD we can distribute to members and prospective members.
I will post a link to it from the NCLR website.

No doubt...I would really like to be on a trip that gets videod...and Mr.Video (Jim) does this kind of work too....this is the stuff that we get put together, show at events, sell to club members for momento's and gets played on the DVD systems at the dealerships that sponsor us.........
Sort of off topic, but when you think of all the talent this club has in video/photography/communications.....I really think that we as a club could get something going to show the rest of the people why it is we enjoy rovers/offroad....
We could actually do instructional videos, event videos etc....just floors me what the club is capable of.

Josh,
Nice video quality. What camera was it shot on? Native 1080i?
Looking forward to seeing a finished product.

You know Jim and Josh, I am looking at my camera right now, it is the Sony AVCHD 1080 with the 40 gigs.....I am not any good at video editing, but if we are doing a run, is that a camera that I can run footage with and give to someone to "edit" for me? I am thinking becuase we are doing that Alleghany Trail in May, and I was thinking of trying to tape some of it too....

Mike,
Does that camera record to DVD? I can import clips to edit from that. Other than that, I'd need the camera to transfer other hard disk media.

Actually it records to hard drive, or memory stick. I thought it was like yours. But I can burn to a DVD at home and forward a copy of that? What/How do I format the video on the camera to the format you would need?

Mike,
My camera is the Sony HDR-HC5 which records to mini dv tapes. It records native 1080i but can export to both high def & analog mode for older monitors. I don't have a card reader for yours but a dvd in the 1080i format would work for me. I have dvd decrypter that will strip away the useless file information.
I like your idea of creating an off road DVD, I'd want to make sure everyone had a standard to follow like 1080i minimum resolution.
I won't make the next MORG but I'll make an attempt at the after party.

I'm the one that did the quick editing on this, I'm sure JP would have produced something superior as he has more creative talent when it comes to cinematography...I'm also relatively unfamiliar with Adobe Premiere Pro. That's why I'm letting him take his time to get to the footage, both of us have been very busy with school. To give you an idea, this is my 3rd week in a row of midterms, and it's not looking like it's letting up :P
Glad you guys like it, I'm really looking forward to producing a final cut with all of the footage.

Oh, and to answer the question regarding the use of footage from other cameras, I'm not sure how that'd work. I don't really know enough about camcorders and footage quality to determine whether the footage would 'blend' properly from camera to camera.
I'm guessing that it would be fine if it's shot at 1080i ~30fps or 720p 30-60fps. I know most in the club would be very happy with the extended footage....so I'd say Yes, we'd gratefully take and edit any footage we receive if it's quality and content match what we're working with (e.g. non-shaky cam is a must, etc.)

The music really adds to the video Josh, that sound track is awesome! Might I ask who the artist is?

Well, I will try and remember to take the camera (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665089060) and the tripod I can try and take video and stills of any trip, without the wife having to pull out the Canon and lenses and such.
I'll talk to Leigh, see how tight the schedule is and what to expect (after the recce run) and see if a video of the Alleghany trail would be possible. Not sure how much record room I have, but I can figure it out.....take a memory card or 2.
Then I could load it onto a CD and send it to someone to edit, or if someone knows of a freeware (like GIMP for camera's) to really play with the video, I can enlist my wife to assist me and try and do it ourselves....
I can't wait to see the full Shaver video. And Gary is right, music choice was spot on!

The music is "Spectres In the Fog" by Hans Zimmer, part of The Last Samurai soundtrack.

I would recommend using Adobe Premiere Pro, there is a trial. Unfortunately the program is expensive, unless you decide to obtain it through less legitimate means.
If you decide to stay legit, you may find a wonderful open source or freeware editor on this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_editing_software

Thanks....looks like a LOT to learn, so maybe I'll play with the kid vid's and leave the Rover stuff to professionals right now.....
If I only had the capacity to just "get" this .....

Josh,
I've been thinking about creating a reel with some new music, if time permits I would like to try to compose a sound track for it, if you guys have some script with timing, I could start working on it.
I'll pm you.

It is a lot to learn, but taken in small quantities you gradually build up your knowledge base. There are so many great free tutorials available online, it's just a matter of making the time to learn...which I find to be the hardest thing to do.
JP and I would have a fun time working with the footage, I probably have more time on my hands, but I'm not as experienced right now. There are probably others in the club that are also familiar with film and would love to help.
If you shoot any footage, just mail it out on a DVD and we'll work with it.

Send me a PM with what you can do. I'm all very amateur when it comes to this video stuff, I have a general understanding of media editing, but nothing too specific.

Ok, I downloaded DIVX and still can't see it
EDIT
I was able to see it only by using the mirror site. That is simply awesome. Now I understand what all the raving is about! When will the full version be up for sale? sign me up :)

The soundtrack from the Last Samuria seems appropriate considering that morning unbeknownst to us (the group who went on this trip) our march or drive back led us to a very difficult and challenging evening! Much like the Last Samurias except we all got back safely despite the long day winching and shoveling snow.
Can't wait for the finished product; definately a trip to be remembered and learn from!
Funny that I am saying this (because after that snow trip; didn't want to see snow for awhile again), "Can't wait to do it again next year". :D Check out the smile from Mike or Arnival - just a taste of what we all went thru that evening!
Ok Josh, take care of midterms first; finish it when time permits; we can all wait!

David (Dbregman) has this excellent idea of printing stickers for NCLR members participating on the upcoming Oregon trip; and retro-actively (Gary's request), to print similiar stickers (will have NCLR, trip name and year on the stickers) for the NCLR Mojave trip last month March.
Nice collection(s) and something to show for making the trip.
I would like to do the same and request stickers made for NCLR Shaver Lake 2008 Snow Trip! I'd buy a sticker and I am sure others will!
Thus consistent with issueing stickers for the 3 NCLR sanctioned trips thus far in 2008!

Ron, start a thread to discuss stickers. I love the idea, but I want small trip-specific stickers. e.g. boy scout badges, each is unique, and they are tiny so you can fit them all on the uniform.
With anything larger than say a 2x4" give or take, the rover will run out of window space in less than two years.
Something like this, if possible:

Thanks. Quickly put it together to give an example of the type of thing I'd be interested in....not that specific design (especially since the background image is copyrighted), but following the concept. :)

I totally agree with Josh about the "Badge" stickers (I dig your concept for the Shaver Lake '08 trip). I discussed this "badge/ribbon" sticker idea with Dave B. at the end of the WFA weekend. If we could get the badges in a curved shape (to match the bottom edge of the coming NCLR oval stickers, then people could add them as they participated in events. People would have a record of their adventures/events and not fill their windows so quickly. Dave suggested a sticker or badge for the WFA '08 course, which I would totally buy. Just my $0.02.
