Since RR8 is officially on, chime in if you are planning on attending! We need a good turn out this year to represent NCLR. I plan on attending and hope I am not the only one from NCLR there.

Hey Will,

Are you willing to trail-boss the "extreme" section of Defense with us? You would need to be first truck in, plus be the primary spotter...I don't want to tackle that on my own. I can take you up there Friday if you want to check out what we would be getting in to...

Yes It would be an honor to trail boss the last section. I walked right through it last last year.

Isn't that where you spent the good part of the day hung up on a small rock :D

Actually it was Hercules P38

Heading down Thursday after work in RV towing Shrek, lay over in Bakersfield?, expect early Friday arrival PSR hoping to recce Defense Mine

Chuck are you game?

Desertcrawler

I am up for that as well. Perhaps even push on a bit further (ie Techapachi) so we can recce that layover spot for the Mojave trip.

I lost my GPS waypoints for Defense so the Recce on Friday is becoming more critical... haven't gotten official word from anyone that I am leading it but expect to soon...

Trying to avoid Reno & Carson City traffic ;)

Gotcha. Sometimes the touron lake traffic is ten times worse. Nothing beats cruising 28 through Sand harbor behind a minivan that stops in the middle of the HWY for repeated photo ops.

True, but we're not going during high season. Never had a traffic/turista problem during March or April. Snow yes.

Yes It would be an honor to trail boss the last section. I walked right through it last last year.

Isn't that where you spent the good part of the day hung up on a small rock :D

Actually it was Hercules P38

That small rock was a challenge for all the LR's that choose to reach the top of the trail - except for Gotrovr, pictures at http://spaces.msn.com/conalmack
I would certainly like another shot at this trail. (I have only ever needed a winch or required a pull on 4 occasions Defense mine, High centered in truckhaven, Mud hole in Utah and in Moab on Steel Bender when i destroyed my rear diff carrier) Of course driver skill / experiance counts for lot - not just the vehicle mods- however that last obstacle on Defense mine does irritate me. I had watched the other LR's struggle and decided to make 2 attempts and then just winch. That was when the agonizingly slow line speed of my MM winch became rather frustrating. The small rock i negotiated no problem - see photos at http://spaces.msn.com/conalmack It was the obstacle just before that "small rock" which presented the problem for the 6000lb P38, with a viscous CD and a rear truTrac LSD. Thats my excuse- but the driver skills, left foot braking, engaging the truTrac's, and loading up the viscous CD are all a learning process from these experiences.
While i try and use common sense and judgement to avoid mechanical carnage (33" tires on standard driveshafts/ cv's and i do carry spare complete axle assemblies) with a long drive back to LA etc.
I have now installed a front GBR truTrac with a stronger 4 pin carrier, still need to replace the front driveshaft - (instead of putting the money into a quality winch!) so yes i would like to run Defense mine on Saturday if that meets the approval of the trail leader? I have not built my truck to take on Isham canyon, but Defense mine is the only trial i have done in DV that i could not negotiate on that particular day without assistance. My RR is close to being built for my intended purpose, as long distance freeway cruser and reasonably capable trail vehicle and i do want to see if i can complete the trail unaided and without mechanical breakage.

I suspect with proper guidance and trail maintenance ;) you'll do fine.

Desertcrawler

I am not talking about the last section driving up to the mine.

I am thinking about a much more extreme section, referred to as "Cummings Gap" which I ran during Panamint Valley Days. It is something I have never made it all the way up without requiring a winching. So it will be a challenge.

We will want to make it an optional part of the trip for those who want to avoid it -- I would think lockers, at a minimum, would be required.

We are gonna be leaving on Thursday at about 3pm, driving as far as we can get before we get tired (which means overnighting someplace between Bakersfield and RidgeCrest). As we will be towing, our top speed will be somewhat limited to 75 or so, and we will be slower going up hills..

I think Gary and Will are leaving around the same time, and both will also be towing. What worked last time was that we all kept cell phones of each other, and met up on the road someplace. Didn't want to slow anybody down -- especially since you can't use the carpool lanes when you are towing..

Will probably be doing the recce for Defense late Friday morning, after we arrive, set up camp, etc...

Wife just clobbered the Disco tonite..down to ZERO vehicles...must rent a temp vehicle for the rest of week.:o
She said someone backed into her and pushed in on the right edge of the TJM bumper into the wheel well. Can't turn the tire without major tire damage. Also bumper got pushed into headlight module and broke the lower trim. AAA just towed it to the body shop. I'll get an estimate tomorrow.
Don't know whether to be  or :( or both.

So much for Easter...

Bummer Rup! But hang on! There will be other trips and sounds w/the damage - you can be out of the body shop in no time. That is what insurance is for IMO!

Let me know if you can use a stock 04 D2 rear bumper; I am upgrading my rear (maybe this is an opp for you to upgrade to Rovertym (smile)) with the new Rovertym rear bumper for D2s soon (as soon as Rovertym is finished fabricating it/ready to ship to Tony for the install).

RR7 would be a great one to go to, it is hosted by NCLR, SCLR, Las Vegas, and San Diego clubs. Go to the SCLR website www.sclrclub.org and you can get registered. The Oregon Discovery trip would be a good one for you too, based on location...

Look at the trip schedule on this site, most of our trips are getting posted up here. There are other opportunites (such as the Jeepers Jamboree in July on the Rubicon trail) that people do that aren't offical runs. Also, we do an introductory trip the first Saturday of every month at Hollister, the now infamous MORG.

We invite prospective members to come as someones guest for the first time, then ask that you join the club and get your cool T-shirt before coming with us a second time. I think RR7 rules are the same...

The adjuster was suppose to look at the vehicle last week. Had to complain to insurance co.they said an adjuster will go out tomorrow afternoon. I've lost a week in getting a new TJM bumper. I'm thinking of putting on my 03 plastic and trimming it for RR7.
What's your opinions?

have the adjuster look first, then swap bumper if last resort

Last minute change in plans means it is just me and lilCrawler. We are gonna take the Disco w/o a trailer and sleep in tent cots.

I am actually going to try and push all the way through to Panamint, or at least to RidgeCrest. I'd like to set up those cots and wake up to a Death Valley Sunrise....

As I may be the 1st person to arrive, do we want to set up a special NCLR camp area? I do have our banner, and can hang it up someplace -- as I'll be tenting versus RVing it maybe I can hold a few RV spots/tent spots for other NCLR members on Saturday night? I'm not sure of the actual list of attendees:

Will - assume you have RB
Chuck - tenting it
Rupert - hoteling it
Gary - tenting it?

others?

Gotrovr
03-31-2008, 05:19 PM

"Really Big motorized tent on wheels"

Anyway, maybe it'll be me flying by you on the 5 with my trailer-less D2 on Thursday... that is if you hit the road early enough...
